Welcome to this global forum for cooperative learning (CL) named Network of International Cooperative Learning Educators and Enthusiasts (NICLEE) — pronounced “nicely” — an English acronym that evokes images of people everywhere gathering in this virtual space for enjoyable, friendly, inclusive, supportive, inquisitive interactions on issues, policies, practices, and resources relevant to CL.
The purpose of NICLEE is to cultivate ongoing communication among educators worldwide who are passionate about fostering continued growth and development of CL. This network operates within the electronic platform of this website, designed to meaningfully engage and support global interaction among CL enthusiasts.
Specifically, NICLEE provides a forum for highlighting significant CL efforts around the world, sharing ideas and information, exploring resources and questions, proposing projects and inquiry, and celebrating effective CL activities and applications in their many innovative forms across diverse contexts. As a language widely recognized and used globally, English will be used on this website for now.
Previously, the International Association for the Study of Cooperation in Education (IASCE) advanced cooperative learning globally over its 40 years of sponsoring in-person conferences and providing a range of useful resources. Since the IASCE legally dissolved its nonprofit status in December 2019—and because in-person gatherings have become more challenging, while online options for staying connected have become more widely available and user-friendly—NICLEE was formed.
We recognize that a CL network in virtual space may benefit and energize international interactions on CL theory, research, and practice.
We recognize that a CL network in virtual space may benefit and energize international interactions on CL theory, research, and practice.
We envision NICLEE as holding promise for continued global discussions and sharing CL innovations—including CL in classroom instruction, curriculum development, professional development, and effective leadership in educational organizations.
NICLEE extends a warm “cooperative” welcome to everyone—those who developed lasting friendships through past participation in the IASCE, as well as those new to CL and this network!
This NICLEE website is in its beginning stages and will grow as additional components are added to expand sharing and participation.
In contrast to the IASCE, NICLEE is a global network, an electronic platform, not an association. There are no dues, no newsletter, and no sponsored conferences. Those who were IASCE members and friends, as well as newcomers, can immediately participate, and also invite colleagues into the conversation.
We look forward to continuing the meaningful cooperative interactions and relationships forged through the IASCE over its 40 years, via this newly formed NICLEE to support and sustain cooperative learning efforts worldwide!
We are establishing a cooperative leadership team for NICLEE that expresses the values of cooperation and shared decision-making. Our model for this comes from the IASCE, which established a co-presidency in the late 1990s to share and draw upon greater leadership skills and experiences and to ensure full active participation and engagement with a working board. Lynda Baloche, Celeste Brody, and Maureen Breeze successfully shared the co-presidency (in pairs) of the IASCE over a period of many years.
